Surviving Kenya: Through His Lens
2009 Emmy Award Winner - Advanced Media Reporting

With a master's degree in Online Journalism, Julie has always enjoyed finding unique ways to turn compelling broadcast stories into interactive online experiences.  They provide an outlet for news consumers to explore the narrative beyond the traditional television piece.

“Surviving Kenya: Through His Lens" began as a broadcast story during the deadly 2007 Kenya Elections.  Targeted ethnic violence turned neighbors into executioners.  The civil war and ethnic cleansing had the potential for world-wide consequences, yet the story was barely a blip on U.S. television.

Compelled by the desire to make the story relevant to a domestic audience, Julie decided to tell it through the eyes of a local photojournalist.

Her work on this project earned her the first ever Multi-Media Emmy Award.
